What is an NIE and do I need one?

The NIE, which stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero (Foreigner's Identity Number), is a unique identification number assigned to foreign citizens in Spain. It acts as your tax identification number and is essential for many financial or legal activities in the country.

This is an NIE, NOT the green certificate or the TIE card

Both residents and non-residents can obtain an NIE. It's used for a wide range of situations, including:

It's important to note that having an NIE does not grant you residency rights in Spain.

When issued on its own (not in conjunction with residency), the NIE is a simple white A4 certificate containing your unique identification number.

An NIE can either be obtained via the Spanish consulate in your country of origin or with an appointment at the local Comisaria (police station).
