The Digital Certificate

What is it? Who's it for? What's the benefit?

A digital certificate is not a physical certificate but a cryptographic key — aka a Magic Elf who lives in your computer, tablet or phone that can verify your identity when needed.

Anyone who has an NIE can get one irrespective of residency status.

It enables you to carry out many procedures online with Spanish government websites, whether national, regional, or local, instead of having to physically attend an appointment or fill in lots of details. It's especially helpful if you don't speak Spanish, don't live here, or don't have time to attend appointments.

Some of the places you can use it are (and this is not an exhaustive list):

• Spanish Tax office
• Social security
• Public health service
• Renewing or downloading your padrón (depending on the council)
• Tráfico (that's driving licenses and vehicles)
• Accessing your online citizens' file for official notifications
• Certain visas and appointments at the foreigners' department
• Other dealings with your local council
• Giving an official, power of attorney
